This is supposed to be a tour diary and I suppose there are things that I could talk about re: Cross summer tour, but so far, no, I have nothing important to say. I know that seeing wonderful friends has been incredible thus far as well as making new ones but the real deal good news has been the excitement of our sets.

Things have been good lately. The show this past Sunday in Columbus was fantastic and I would like to thank Chad Shepherd for putting it together as well as playing with his group Jam Division. Big thanks also to Ginger Fetus for ruling it and to Valerie for hanging out...also, thank you R. C. Colburn for accompanying me on the ride to and fro...CELEBRATE! will hit soon my friend! Get drawin'!

Still waiting on official interary for July/August tour with Castanets. However dates are up on Myspace for the shows I'll be playing on the way home. If you absolutely have to ink something in yr planner, jot down "Go to Fact House on July 2nd
'LET'S SEE THE RAIN FACER' C20 AND 'HOLDING ON' C32 have both been sent to Mr. Animal Disguise and will see the light of day in roughly a month and a half, definitely for tour so put some cash back for these first two M.A. Turner cuts. Check here to keep an eye out for ordering details.

In art land, I am working on a book with R.C. Colburn that will be ready by July 2nd. There I said it, now we HAVE to get it completed.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, there are more a few leftover gems from the ashes known as Warmer Milks. Vinyl and compact disc format details coming soon.

Hanging out at Clint's jamming Reptile House, Lungfish and "Dirt" while gearing up for tonight's show in Columbus. Leaving early to hit some bookstores and sip coffee before gig.

Played that show at the Boiler Room last night to barely anyone. 95% of those in attendance hated it. The music itself was more violent than I had anticipated but in retrospect I am pleased with the results.

Got my side of said soon to be in the world cassette finished this week and am mailing it off to these fine FOLX tomorrow. Speaking of the 'Drifter, he's got his paws all over my forthcoming "Let's See The Rain Facer" cassette. Two songs from the session are up and available for free download on this weird 'SPACE MALLS so don't be cooler than a coupla chillers, meat head.

Also, in the works o'er at Tacoma's ADR, is the highly anticipated cassette release of "Holding On", a record I did out at Black Pete's place in lovely Germantown last summer.

For those who are still holding on to a lot of what is known as yesterday, there are beautiful leftovers on their way from the Warmer Milks camp but you'll just have to be patient and chew on this in the meantime.

Review of Soft Walks from Toldeo Bellows:

I got into these dudes via Hair Police and Robert Beatty's Mountaain label. A Lexington KY free-roaming collective seemingly headed by Michael Turner, I was absolutely floored by their Penetration Initials CD-R, a live recording of what amounts to a "Thick as a Brick"-type album-length song suite, albeit far removed from anything Jethro Tull has ever even come close to touching. Embracing country, folk, psych of all forms, drone, and occasionally FAR OUT improv jams, Penetration Initials has a fragile, razor's edge intimacy about it, catching a band discovering itself wherever it happens to find itself and spinning out full-blown catharsis at every turn. Many of their other recordings range freely throughout the aforementioned genres, depending upon who shows up to play/record and what the general mood is that strikes the players as they create. For my money, this is a very refreshing and honest approach to music-making, one that dismisses the notion of creating a consistent sound in order to kowtow to a preconceived and limited idea of what an audience will and will not accept at any given moment. Soft Walks is likely the most accessible release Turner and friends have yet concocted and retains a similar sense of intimacy, as if one is catching the band in a barn or on the porch, playing a warm, subdued set for close friends. Obvious comparisons can be drawn to Palace Music (a member of the Oldham family plays currently with the band and recorded and mixed the album as well) in terms of feel and approach, but what comes out is much looser, freer, untethered. Palace was far more polished and indie-rock-friendly (at least musically speaking) than the Warmer Milks we find here, who seem to revel in a "warts and all" approach to recording that accepts any mishaps or "wrong" notes as part of the music-making process. The majority of the tracks here are fairly mellow, but around track 6, some of Turner's gnarlier potentialities surface, grafting a psychedelic, Middle-Eastern/Far-East patina onto the sounds of Appalachia country/folk-rock unraveling. It's those elements that prevent Warmer Milks from being accepted by a wider audience, but those are also the elements that keep me interested, wondering where Turner's band is headed to next; they embrace an adventurous spirit which could potentially reinvigorate much of what passes for indie rock nowadays. Keep your eyes out for these fellers.

Friday night I played a set with Eric Lanham under the guise "Lifestyle Choice". Exploring sounds in a celestial-intensive context, the choice is to live beyond yet be here now. Be Here Now.

Saturday I got the chance to play with Greg, Trevor and Clint as an instrumental version of Warmer Milks. My friend J Todd Dockery (see his Covertly By Snatches link under 'The Friends' for more information on his wonderful art) had a book release party and asked us to provide some music. The performance was improvisational and quite satisfying! Clint played bass guitar and the new addition felt wonderful. I look forward to playing more music with Clint (as well as Greg and Trevor) in the near future.

Post Paranormal Over Time Festival

The first Paranormal Over Time Festival is now behind us. No one fell into the fire
pit and every performance was from the gut and exceptional. No Johnny Law and no nagging neighbors. No sales pitch nor trends pushed on a single attendee. I would like to thank Leslia and her crew for preparing amazing food and cleaning up so much. Thanks to Daniel Higgs, Eyes and Arms of Smoke, Shakey, Caboladies, Ben Allen, Jason Schuler and Three Legged Race. Special thanks to Dave Bird for sitting in with Warmer Milks. Benjo, you rule for making the drive. All the others that drove long distances to be here rule too. Of course, the Kentucke crews always make life more worthwhile and I thank you all as well! The only problem we faced the whole weekend was mosquito bites. I couldn't ask for more. Everyone gave what they had to help with gas and food. Events of this sort seem to be a dying breed, but not on our end. Thanks to Lin for these photos. More to come on Tombstone Gravy.

Thank you Michael at Marvelous Records as well Boat Person and Gunn/Orleans for stepping in to shed light. It was a good ending to a fantastic tour. See more of you sooner or later. Two days ago, I rode a borrowed bike from Gay St. in Columbus to a local bookstore and passed an attractive older woman smoking a cigarette. The cruise was nice and foreign feeling. There I thumbed through an excellent collection of Crumb drawings but went with a much cheaper paperback of Brautigan's early writings. Completely engulfed in books this summer but haven't been able to settle myself to read since traveling through Lexington for recording then the tour. Same goes for drawing...suppose I needed a break from the mind bustle. Ah, the show. Yes, the playing was raging. Low/ h i p attendance but the high of everything being gone made it a beautiful night. Valerie was wonderful and the people we stayed with were fantastic. Thank you Chad for companionship. Exactly.

Last night we met up with Benjamin in Lancaster. Sun melt twenty minutes in, everything had an other worldly sting to it. Played in a kids room located in a basement. First set with Ben. I felt it. Scared and serious. Lancaster's mellowness is not a mellowness of our own but we surfed anyhow. Once all was said and done, I looked up to see two individuals left in the room watching. A Jimmy Eat World video was being filmed upstairs I believe. At least it looked like it. Booze Cruise was said. Insider irony. I bet those house kids need some liquor to ride this ship. Shit.

Fuck. New York City was loaded with so many experiences in only three days. Psychedelics on Friday geared us up properly for a radio performance early the next morning. Jeff Conklin Brought Out His Dead for us and we thank him from the bottom of our hardfoot for his unrelenting hospitality. Selector Joe graced us a portal into East Village Radio and we thank him heartily for his goodness as well. The pretty young miss that attended the session was more than generous with kindness so thank you much fine lady. Keep up the listening, please. K, had a "bbq" gig in Ridgewood where we played with Margot and Dave Shuford as well the kind peoples of Baltimore's Mr. Moccasin. Sparse in attendance but heavy in spirit with those who knose. After some sun breaking, we attended a D Charles Speer and The Helix performance in the evening. Mr. Chew invited us into his home for the night where we chatted over delicious coffee and indulged ourselves in more wacked filming.

Sunday really brought it all down. No Benjo, Judge did NOT play but the intensity was birthing itself through all involved. After gathering up the troops, we headed over to Gunn's place to meet up with him and Orleans for playing. The performance at Eat featured these two scouts as well and needless to say, it burned hard and sharp. The gentlemen at Eat provided an excellent evening filled with amazing records, exceptional food and tasty coffee. I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Hamish Kilgour of The Clean and it is blowing my fucking mind. Thank you for the talisman. It is already proving to do some good for our time spent here out in the nowhere. Marc Orleans is a jewel for letting us invade his space last night. Yr record spinning hit the spot buddy. Dirty Mike, you are something special for going far out with us Friday as well as talking Carrie into letting two stinkies blow up the futon.

Staring at sidewalks and streets in other people's towns, I've realized just how weak and insular we can get living in our little boxes. While I live in a beautiful, nature surrounded environment, stomaching the local lack of tolerance gets to me while I spend a few days away from it. I also become more attuned to the fear inside myself when I step into others spaces. Luckily, as I grow older, I become stronger and with strength comes its bonuses.The only bonus I will recieve at this moment is a time machine to get us there faster. Mic Mac has to use the restroom and BK is cucumber cool, flopped across the back seat mid cat nap. I'm shotgun wondering on our ETA status. Tonight Gunn and Orleans sit in with the Milks so the three of us are obviously excited amidst a slight wear. The exhaustion will go post roof when Shawn and I make the Phily to Louisville drive tonight after the show but no plane gonna wait for that rag tag so a long drive it is. Boston show was drugged and sleazy cum shiny and playful. Ben and I watched the set last night on video before we went to sleep. Following the light long after the screen went blue, I drifted happily into shut down. Angela Sawyer's Weirdo Records house was the perfect place to rest for the night. Incredible hospitality and amazing records inches from where I slept. I picked up some Cage and T Rex so between those and the road burns from everyone, I will have enough music to last me for a long while. See all you jokers on the flip.
